Daniel Barrow (Winnipeg, Manitoba)
manual animation, spoken word performance

Daniel Barrow is a Winnipeg based media artist. Since 1993, Barrow has used the overhead projector to relay ideas and short narratives, creating and adapting comic book narratives to a "Manual" form of animation by projection, layering and manipulating images to create a hybrid form comprised of film, drawing and performance which Barrow describes as "graphic performance, manual animation or live illustration". Barrow’s work has been featured at Articule, (Montreal) the Winnipeg Art Gallery, YYZ (Toronto) as well as festivals across the nationally and internationally including Mountain Standard Time (Calgary), Internationale Video et Art Electronique, Champ Libre Festival (Montreal), 2nd Global Attic (Rotterdam) Rencontres Herouvilles (Normandy, France) and the Edinburgh Fringe Film and Video Festival.

The Face of Everything is a performance work set in mid 70s Las Vegas and tells a fictional story based on the life experiences of Scott Thorson, Liberace’;s boyfriend. The symbol of the face as a blank canvas or template is central, and acts as a stage for transformation and meaning. A combination of cartoon vignettes, live monologue and a nostalgic electronic score composed by Russian Futurist Matthew Adam Hart, parallel a Barrow's monologue. The work reflects the artist’s interest in 20th century masculine aesthetics and panache as well as dated styles of media and obsolete technologies.
