John Abram was born in England in 1959. After composition studies at Keele University with Roger Marsh and Peter Dickinson he came to Canada in 1984 to study at the University of Victoria with Rudolf Komorous (composition) and Doug Collinge (electroacoustic music).
From 1986 to 1988 he was Associate Director and Conductor of the Open Space New Music Series at the Open Space Gallery in Victoria. Living and working in Toronto from 1989 to 1994, he co-founded The Drystone Orchestra and was a member of ARCANA, also performing with ARRAYMUSIC, Strange Companions and others. In 1994 he moved to Calgary and has been active as a recording engineer, producer, and audio editor. He is on the staff at Mount Royal College Conservatory where he teaches composition and theory (he also runs the Technology Lab there) and has taught at the University of Calgary. Presently he is the Artistic Director of New Works Calgary.
John has also been active in film and multimedia work-in 1997 his music for the short Canadian film The Skating Party was nominated for an AMPIA award for best soundtrack of an independent film. More recently he wrote the music (and muzak) for Gary Burns's film waydowntown, which won awards at the Toronto, Halifax and Vancouver International Film Festivals. John's music has been heard across Canada and elsewhere, performed by Arcana, Arraymusic, Brandon Chamber Players, The Burdocks, Concentus Corvinus, Continuum, Les Coucous Bònòvoles, The Drystone Orchestra, Eve Egoyan, Interensemble, Rosa Selvatica, George W. Welch and others.
John Abram will perform on bass recorder, MIDI Wind instrument and computer. There will be CDs available in the gallery for you to listen to if you can't stand the noise he's making live, so BRING YOUR CD WALKMAN! The CDs contain some source material for some of the pieces John will be playing, in addition to environmental and travelogue sound. Pieces include: Omaggio a Fellini (premiere), Snow Piece (premiere), In the Zeppelin of Love, Jefferson I & II, Wrong Number (premiere).
